Men’s Swimming Defeats Alfred State, 56-31

AURORA, N.Y. – The Wells College men's swimming team set down the Pioneers of Alfred State College by a score of 56-31 Wednesday afternoon at the Wells College Aquatic Center. In head-to-head meets, the Express improve to 3-6 overall on the season.

Junior captain Thomas Laier (East Nassau, N.Y.) secured the first victory for the Express on the afternoon, claiming first place in the Men's 200 Yard Freestyle via a time of 2:06.32. That time ranks him sixth all-time in program history – the all-time record of 1:55.81 was set by teammate Matthew Sleezer (Gloversville, N.Y.) on Nov. 5, 2011.

Sleezer went on to post a time of 22.98 seconds in the Men's 50 Yard Freestyle, defeating the second place finisher by little more than one-and-a-half seconds. This time ranks him second all-time, trailing his own first place record by only .40 seconds (22.48, 11/3/2012).

Freshman Patrick Munroe (Williamsville, N.Y.) posted a first place time of 5:00.43 in the Men's 400 Yard Individual Medley. His time ranks him second all-time in program history, trailing Chris Guard's time of 4:55.68 set on Feb. 18, 2011. Sleezer responded in the Men's 100 Yard Butterfly, scoring five points for the Express with a time of 1:00.20 – this time, a personal best, ranks him fourth all-time in program history.

Sophomore Alex Lamphear (Springfield, N.H.) and Alfred State's Jake Drew each recorded a time of 1:09.06 in the Men's 100 Yard Backstroke, the first tie of the season. Following tiebreaker protocol, each swimmer was able to secure four points for their respective teams as the two lone entrants. Munroe once against posted a first place finish for the Express, swimming the Men's 500 Yard Freestyle in 5:38.60. This time also set a personal best for Munroe, ranking him third all-time in program history.

Tom Dougherty won the Men's 100 Yard Breaststroke and set a personal best time in the process, posting a 1:15.19 to earn five points for his team. To conclude the day's activities, the Men's 400 Yard Freestyle Relay squad of Laier, Matthew VanArmongen (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Munroe and Sleezer posted a 3:43.38 to rank sixth in program history in that race.
