Roser Nets 1,000th Career Point In Loss To Alfred

AURORA, N.Y. – Junior Ashley Roser (Taberg, N.Y.) became the first player in program history to reach the 1,000 career point milestone Wednesday evening in a 66-61 loss to the Saxons of Alfred University at the Frances Tarlton Farenthold Athletic Wing. With the loss, the Express fall to 1-3 overall on the season while Alfred moves to 3-2 following the non-conference tilt.

With her layup with 14:28 remaining in the second half of this evening's contest, Roser surpassed 1,000 career points to become the first women's basketball player to reach that benchmark in program history and the second basketball player from Wells College to accomplish that feat. In 2010, Darrell Bullock reached the 1,000 point mark in the team's final game of the season, a 99-71 loss to SUNYIT in his 51st career game. As a junior, Roser accomplished her feat in only 49 contests.

With the majority of the half spent trading baskets, the Express boasted a 27-24 lead with 4:21 remaining in the first half following a Holli Erkson (Cooperstown, N.Y.) layup. However, a jump shot by Heather Hebert preceded a three point attempt by Harley Cleary as they recaptured a two point lead with 2:35 remaining in the half. Two unopposed Cleary layups ended the half, as she was directly responsible for all seven of the team's points in the waning minutes.

The Express rallied in the second half, recapturing a one point lead following a Paige Stone (Madison, N.Y.) layup with 13:25 remaining in regulation. With the Alfred bench immediately calling a time-out, the Saxons went on to regain the lead following a Cleary layup and never looked back from there while building their lead to 10 points with a Hailey Sick layup with 6:39 remaining.

The home team was able to build a rally within the final three minutes. Juniors Brittany White (Lewiston, N.Y.) and Roser each buried both of their free throws to cut the deficit to four, 60-56, with 1:23 remaining in the second half. A Roser layup with 1:07 remaining cut the margin to two and a foul by Lindsay Drummond granted Roser two free shots. Burying 1-of-2, the Saxons maintained a slim one point margin.

Rachael Steadman and Sick went 4-for-4 and 2-for-2, respectively, within the final 51 seconds as the Express were forced to foul, placing the game out of reach.

Cumulatively, Roser led the way with 29 points and 20 rebounds, team-highs in both categories. While also leading in blocks, Roser was 11-for-16 in field goals, coming up one field goal shy of tying her career mark of 12, set against SUNY Cobleskill on Jan. 17. Erkson ranked second on the squad with nine points to her credit, also collecting six boards. Her six assists led the team in that category. Off of the bench, Stone was 4-for-5 in field goals for eight points.

For the Saxons, Cleary went a team-best 10-for-19 in field goals en route to a 25 points. Steadman ranked second on the team with 11 points, converting 5-of-6 of their free throws. Hailey Sick posted nine boards and eight total points.
