Women’s Basketball Notches 74-60 Victory Over SUNY Cobleskill

AURORA, N.Y. – The Express saw two different players post a double-double as the Wells College women's basketball team posted a 74-60 victory over the Fighting Tigers of SUNY Cobleskill Saturday afternoon at the Frances Tarlton Farenthold Athletic Wing. With the victory, the Express collect their fourth straight victory overall to even their overall record at 9-9 on the season while improving to an 8-2 North Eastern Athletic Conference record.

The women's basketball team currently sports their best overall record to date across their first 18 games and their eight conference wins extend a program record in that category. Their 8-2 NEAC record places them second overall in the North Division as the Storm of Keuka College sport one more victory and one less loss than the Express. Winners of a program record four straight games overall, the Express are now one of only five teams within the conference with a .500-or-better cumulative record on the season.

Junior Ashley Roser (Taberg, N.Y.) posted her 52nd career double-double with a 17 point game alongside a team-best 16 boards. She also recorded a team-best seven blocks, ranking her second all-time in single game program history. As a team, the Express also posted the most assists in program history in a single game with 22. Sophomore Jessilyn Artaho-Aki (Kapaa, Hawaii) tallied 16 total points, shooting 7-of-14 from the floor while freshman Lindsay Achzet (Johnstown, N.Y.) converted her second career double-double with 16 points and 13 boards.

The Express trailed once in the first half, allowing a Samantha Davis layup with nine seconds left to capture a 33-31 lead. However, Artaho-Aki posted a layup with no time left on the clock to knot the score at 33 aside entering the locker rooms. At one point, Wells boasted a nine point lead following a converted foul shot from Roser with 7:42 remaining in the first half to bring the score to 22-13. Cumulatively in the first half, the Express outscored the Fighting Tigers by a 20-to-18 margin in the paint, but allowed 16 opposing points off of Express turnovers.

After trading baskets early in the second half, a layup by Kady Porterfield preceded a free throw by Tracee Schiebel as the Fighting Tigers captured their second lead of the afternoon with 17:58 remaining in regulation time. From that point, however, the Express utilized an Achzet layip and a Holli Erkson (Cooperstown, N.Y.) jumper to recapture a 39-38 lead with 16:08 remaining.

With the score 43-40 in favor of the host Express following a Heidi Anderson jumper with 14:40 remaining in the half, the Express went on to outscore their opponent by a 20-to-5 margin across the game's next seven-plus minutes. A Cassie Smythe (Eden, N.Y.) three-pointer with 7:59 remaining in regulation built up an 18 point lead with time winding down in the second stanza. A Kristen Ryan (Syracuse, N.Y.) layup with 6:09 remaining elevated the Express to a 19 point lead, a game high mark.

Porterfield and Schiebel each struck for 16 points for the Fighting Tigers, with Alexis Hauser securing 10 of her team's 60 points. Schiebel notched a team-best six takeaways while Davis posted a team-leading 10 rebounds and four assists.
