Strong Defense Leads To Women's Basketball Win

The Wells College women's basketball team turned in its best defensive effort of the season and picked up a 56-32 win over Cazenovia College on Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Schwartz Athletic Center.

The Express allowed its fewest points scored by an opponent for any game this season, and Cazenovia's highest-scoring quarter yielded just 10 points in the second quarter. Wells forced 15 turnovers and limited Cazenovia to a 21.9 percent field-goal percentage. The Wildcats were 1-for-25 from behind the 3-point line. The 32 points allowed was the third-best overall defensive performance in the program's modern era over the last seven seasons.

The Express led 24-19 at halftime, and broke the game open by outscoring Cazenovia 17-6 in the third quarter.

Ashida Cooper led Wells with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Carley Ryan had 10 points and five rebounds. Shelby Medovich and Kamarie Maturine were effective inside. Each scored eight points. Medovich had eight rebounds and Maturine had 11 rebounds.

Maturine has five straight games with double-digit rebounds, and has hit that mark in six of the last seven games overall.

Wells moved back to .500 in NEAC play and is 6-6 in the conference and -10 overall. Cazenovia is 3-15 overall and 2-10 in the NEAC.
