Women’s Basketball Team Faces Undefeated Pioneers

The Wells College women's basketball team knew they had an uphill battle this afternoon when they arrived to play Utica College. The Pioneers were undefeated and the Express was completing the tail end of back-to-back road games after an evening matchup at Manhattanville the previous night.

For the second time in as many nights, Wells came out of the break with its best quarter. Against Utica, the Express put up 16 and stayed even with the Pioneers. Wells had its best showing late in the third quarter when they went on a 12-3 run capped by a Jordan Jacobs layup for two of her nine, third-quarter points.

Jacobs had her finest game to date in either leading or co-leading the team in five categories. The junior had a team-high 13 points and led the team in steals with five and blocks with two. She also co-led the team in rebounds with six and assists with three. Her effort was Wells' best as they fell to Utica by an 84-30 score on Saturday, Nov. 16 in a non-conference matchup.

Nearly half of the Pioneers' points came collectively from runs that began the first and second quarters that made it difficult to rally.

Brittany Kropp added eight points with six of those coming from beyond the arc. Maritza Scharoun co-led the team in boards with six, while Lorissa Parks co-led the team in assists with three.

The women's basketball team next returns home to host Elmira on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 6 p.m.
