Express Take Season Opener

(Newburgh, N.Y.)─ The Wells College women's lacrosse team opened their season with an exciting 11-10 victory over Mt. St. Mary's College on Friday evening in Newburgh, N.Y.  Sarah Allen (Clay, N.Y.) led the Express with four goals, while Liz Barclay earned the victory in net with 13 saves. The Knights fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Express improve to 1-0.

With 5:06 on the clock, Wells freshman Courtney Grosser (Penfield, N.Y.) put home a free position attempt to tie the game at 10-10.  The Knights possessed the ensuing draw, though, and ran the clock down inside the final three minutes.  The Mount would have their best chance to win at the 2:35 mark, as a shot from junior Ellen Cashin (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) rung off the post.

Still with possession as the clock ticked under two minutes, the Knights set up sophomore Kaileen Spadaro (Islip, N.Y.) for a look at the net.  Her shot was well-read by Wells senior goalie Elizabeth Barclay (Laporte, Pa.), however, and the Express took over the ball following the save.

Following a clear, Express sophomore Allen found the back of the net for the game-winner following a nice feed from senior Stefanie Miller (Barton, N.Y.).  Barclay would need one more save, this time with 17 seconds remaining, to seal the victory for the visitors.

Massmann led the Knights with a team-high four goals and six groundballs, while Spadaro completed a hat trick with three goals.  Sophomore Sharon Cranwell (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) tallied two goals and a team-high five draw controls.

Grosser, Miller, and sophomore Madeline Bass (Lemon Grove, Calif.) each added a pair of goals for the Express.

The Express return to action tomorrow against SUNY Maritime at 1 p.m. in Throggs Neck, N.Y.
