STRONG FIRST HALF BY MARITIME SINKS EXPRESS

(Throgss Neck, N.Y.)─ The SUNY Maritime women's lacrosse team led 7-3 after the first half and would hold on to defeat the Wells Express 10-7 on Saturday afternoon in Throggs Neck, N.Y. Courtney Grosser (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) and Sarah Allen (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North) each tallied a pair of goals to lead the Express. Kristen Saporito paced Maritime with a game high six goals and one assist. The loss drops Wells to 1-1 on the young season, while Maritime improves to 1-1.

Liz Barclay (Laporte, Pa./Lincoln) finished with nine saves in net for Express, while Stephanie Motes (Suwanee, Ga./North Gwinnett), Kendra Francis (Hooper, Utah/Fremont), and Ariel Taft (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) each tallied one goal to round-out the scoring for the Express.

Maritime goalie Courtney Marietta matched Barclay in net with nine saves, while teammates Catherine Brady and Jill Davenport each added a pair of goals.

Motes gave the Express an early lead on a free-position shot and Allen added to the score with an unassisted goal just three-minute later to give Wells a 2-0 lead. Maritime responded, rattling off four straight goals, including two by Saporito, to take a 4-2 lead. Francis pulled the Express to within one (4-3) but Maritime continued to pour it on, finishing the first half with three straight goals and a 7-3 lead.

The Express went a 3-1 run on goals by Grosser and Allen eight minutes into the second half, pulling to within two (8-6) with 22-minutes to play. The two goal deficit would be as close as the Express would come as Maritime scored two more goals, while playing steady defense to earn the non-conference victory.

It was an evenly played game throughout, the Express held a slight edge in shots 24-22 and groundballs 16-15, while both teams finished with nine saves.

The Express return to action next on Saturday, March 12 at 11:00 a.m. when they travel to take on Ramapo College in Mahwa, N.Y.
