Women’s Lacrosse Dropped By Alfred In Non-Conference Tilt

AURORA, N.Y. – Senior Madeline Bass (Lemon Grove, Calif.) tallied three goals for the Wells College women's lacrosse team in a 19-10 loss to the Saxons of Alfred University Tuesday afternoon at the South Athletic Field. The Express fall to 6-7 overall following the non-conference tilt while the Saxons improve to 8-5 overall on the year. Wells played their sixth-straight home game, the first time in recorded history the Express have played six consecutive home contests in the middle of a season.

Wells tied the game at one apiece with 27:31 remaining in the first half as freshman Amber Jordan (Auburn, N.Y.) quickly answered Tracie McGinnity's opening strike. Alfred scored the game's next seven goals before freshman Andrea Gould (Fulton, N.Y.) buried a free position shot with 11:38 remaining in the first half. Freshman Bri'Anna Horne (Baltimore, Md.) potted an unassisted strike in the half's waning minutes to cut the halftime deficit to 9-3.

The Express scored two of the second half's first three goals as Bass and sophomore Savannah Tucker (Rochester, N.Y.) brought the score to 10-5 in favor of the visitors. With the score at 16-5 following a Rachel Winter strike at 15:55, Wells scored three straight goals to make things interesting as Bass, sophomore Marina Fargnoli (Apalachin, N.Y.) and freshman Alaina Kelahan (New Woodstock, N.Y.) cut the deficit to six.

Alfred was able to stave off the Express comeback, punishing the Express for three goals within the game's final 3:18 to build insurance as time expired. The Saxons saw a team-leading 10 point effort (9-1=10) from Ashley White while Kaitlyn Button potted six goals and two assists as the team focused their offensive efforts through the two players.

Goalkeeper Chelsea Dann (Flagstaff, Ariz.) made 10 saves in the losing effort, dropping her seventh decision of the year. Taylor Tarajos earned the win for Alfred, making nine saves on 18 shots before yielding to Erin Nevin in the waning minutes.

The Express return to action and resume their playoff hunt on the road this weekend, facing-off against the Mustangs of Morrisville State College in a 1:00 p.m. tilt this Saturday, Apr. 27.
