Women’s Lacrosse Drops 16-3 Tilt To Morrisville St.

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Three different players scored goals for the Wells College women's lacrosse team as they posted a 16-3 loss to the Mustangs of Morrisville State College Saturday afternoon at Drake Field. With the loss, the Express slide to 6-8 overall on the year and to 4-4 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Mustangs improve to 9-5 overall while remaining undefeated in league play (8-0).

Following a Jessica Young goal from Morrisville to open the day's scoring, sophomore Savannah Tucker (Rochester, N.Y.) forced home a feed from senior Madeline Bass (Lemon Grove, Calif.) to knot the score at one apiece only 6:25 into the game. The Mustangs went on a 4-0 run before freshman Bri'Anna Horne (Baltimore, Md.) recorded an unassisted goal to cut the score to 5-2.

Wells carried a 9-2 deficit into the half that was later extended to 10-2 as Shelby Wood scored the first goal of the second half for Morrisville. Bass, however, converted a free position chance with 28:11 remaining in regulation time to grant Wells their third goal of the game. The Mustangs closed out the game with six straight unanswered goals, silencing the Express for the majority of the second stanza.

Wood struck for seven of her team's 16 goals while Young added four of her own, including two assists. Morrisville outshot the Express 34-to-13 while holding the decisive edge in ground balls (28-to-20) and draw controls (12-to-9).

Express goalkeeper Chelsea Dann (Flagstaff, Ariz.) allowed 16 goals on 26 shots in her eighth loss of the year. Cailin Dunphy improved to 8-4 on the year, making seven saves on 10 shots to earn the victory.

Three different teams hold a 4-4 record entering Sunday, the final day of the NEAC season – a Wells victory over the Wildcats of Cazenovia College would force a play-in game against Cazenovia in Aurora this Tuesday, Apr. 30 as only four teams will qualify for the NEAC tournament (the top 50% of teams qualify for postseason play, but a play-in game decides the final four). If the Wildcats of SUNYIT post a victory over the Nittany Lions of Penn St.-Abington alongside a Wells victory on Sunday, both the Express and Wildcats would sport a 5-4 record – the Express would advance to the play-in game as they defeated SUNYIT head-to-head earlier in the year.
