Roberson Nets Two In Women's Lacrosse Loss To Alfred

ALFRED, N.Y. – Sophomore Lexie Roberson (Winston-Salem, N.C.) scored two goals and added an assist as the Wells College women's lacrosse team posted a 16-5 loss to Alfred University on Saturday. With the loss, Wells falls to 0-2 on the season while Alfred (1-1) collects their first win following the non-conference tilt.

Roberson led all Wells players with three points (2-1=3) while classmates Alaina Kelahan (New Woodstock, N.Y.), Andrea Gould (Fulton, N.Y.) and Amber Jordan (Auburn, N.Y.) each struck for goals on the afternoon. Roberson also notched a team-best four draw controls while junior Marina Fargnoli (Apalachin, N.Y.) hauled in three draws for the Express.

The Saxons jumped out to a 6-0 lead as Kaitlyn Button scored three of her team's goals during that span. Wells, however, answered with a Roberson goal only 19 seconds after Button's third strike of the game to get on the board. The Express answered with goals from Jordan and Kelahan within the half's final two minutes, cutting the halftime deficit to 9-3.

In the second half of play, Alfred scored the first three goals before Gould and Roberson answered with back-to-back goals to cut the lead to 12-5. Alfred scored four unanswered goals down the stretch to add offensive insurance, eventually capturing a 16-5 lead that the hosts would not relinquish.

Ashley White led all Alfred players with seven points, scoring three goals and four assists (3-4=7). Megan Wendt scored four goals to tie Button for the team lead in goal scoring. Janelle Gallipeau reeled in six draw controls and as many ground balls, leading the team in both categories.

Goaltender Brooke Spanbauer (Niagara Falls, N.Y.), in her first collegiate appearance, halted 10 shots on net in the loss. Taylor Tarajos earned the win between the pipes for Alfred, allowing five goals and making six saves.

The Express return to action Sunday, Mar. 23 as they face-off against Hilbert College in a 2:00 p.m. contest at Nichols High School in North Buffalo, N.Y.
