Women's Lacrosse Falters Against Medaille, 13-8

AURORA, N.Y. – Junior Andrea Gould (Fulton, N.Y.) scored three goals as the Wells College women's lacrosse team posted a 13-8 loss to Medaille College Saturday afternoon at the South Athletic Field. Wells drops to 2-7 overall, losing their fifth-straight game, while falling to 2-4 within the North Eastern Athletic Conference. Medaille (7-2, 6-0 NEAC) remains undefeated in conference play.

Junior Lexie Roberson (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and freshman Nicole Sales (Woodbury, Conn.) each scored two goals while sophomore Shianne Stokes (Mays Landing, N.J.) rounded out the scoring for Wells. Wells converted on just over 50% of their clearing attempts and lost the draw control battle, 14-to-10.

With a 2-1 lead early in the game, Medaille scored six-straight goals entering halftime to take a commanding 7-2 lead. Wells opened up the second half with a free position goal from Gould, but Medaille countered with three-straight to open up a 10-3 lead. The Mavericks wouldn't look back, opening up a 12-4 lead following an Alea Wade goal with 7:56 remaining in regulation time.

The Express scored four of the game's final five goals but the first period dominance by Medaille kept the game out of reach for the hosts. Possessing the lead, the Mavericks drained as much time off of the clock as possible and leaving little time for an extended rally by Wells near the end of the game.

Wells goalkeeper Quinn Doubet (Virgil, N.Y.) made 12 saves in her team's loss. Medaille backstop Rachel Meier allowed eight goals on 17 total shots on goal.

Both teams wore special tee shirts to support Team Molly, an organization whose goal is to fight cancer with kindness, a positive attitude and a hard work ethic. Funds raised from the purchase of the shirts directly benefit the fight against Ewing's sarcoma.

The Express returns to action Sunday, Apr. 19 as they welcome the Wildcats from the SUNY Polytechnic Institute for a 1 p.m. contest at the South Athletic Field.
