Women's Lacrosse Nail-Biter Goes to Alfred

The Wells College women's lacrosse team was in action for the first time in more than two weeks and dropped a close game by a 12-9 score at Alfred University on Thursday, March 23. Wells trailed by just one goal in the final minutes before Alfred sealed the victory with two late goals.

Wells Is 0-2 on the season and Alfred improved to 1-2. Wells is back in action Saturday, March 25 at D'Youville College at 2 p.m.

The Express opened the scoring right off of the opening draw on an unassisted goal from Mackenzie Maloney. It was the only lead of the game for the Express. The game was tied 1-1, 3-3, and 4-4 during the first half. Alfred led 7-5 at halftime.

The largest lead of the game for Alfred came at 9-5, but Wells answered with four of the next five goals. During that rally, Wells brought the margin to within one at 9-8 and 10-9 on free-position shots from Julia Smith and Mackenzie Maloney. The Saxons scored the final two goals in the final five minutes of the game.

Maloney led Wells with six goals and two assists. Renee Bartosz had two goals and two assists. Julia Smith scored the other goal. The Express held an 18-5 advantage in draw controls. Each team had 28 shots. Maloney had nine ground balls, while Miranda Mingen and Savanah Connors had four ground balls each. Goalkeeper Anna Bozeat had eight saves.
