ELMIRA OVERPOWERS EXPRESS

Aurora, New York – The Wells College women's soccer team spent much of the day on defense as the Elmira College Soaring Eagles scored five unanswered goals in the second half en-route to a 5-0 victory Wednesday at Wells. The Soaring Eagles were led by Jenna Wellington (Arkport, NY) with two goals and Danielle Curjulo (Southington, CT) with two assists. Express goalie Claire Petersen (Derby, NY) finished with 11 saves on the day.

Despite allowing 13-shots in the first half the Express were able to keep Elmira off the board with stifling defense, while allowing just one clean shot on net that Petersen was able to knock over the cross bar for a save.

The second half was a completely different story as the Soaring Eagles got on the board early with a goal by Kaitlin Borrelli (New Canaan, CT) in the 51st minute that squeezed underneath Petersen for a 1-0 lead. Elmira would score four goals over the last 20-minutes, including Wellington's two unassisted goals, running away with the 5-0 victory. Elmira finished with 16 shots on goal, three corner kicks and seven offsides. Wells finished with four shots on goal, two corner kicks, and two offsides.

With the loss the Express fall to 6-8-1 (3-3-0 NEAC) on the season, while the Soaring Eagles improve to 3-12-1 (16-0 Empire 8).

Wells will next play against NEAC opponent D'Youville College on Saturday, October 25, at 4:00 pm at D'Youville.
