SAAC NAMES PETERSEN AS SAOW

Claire Petersen, senior Biology major with a minor in Environmental Studies from Buffalo, has been named SAAC Athlete of the Week for the week ending on September 14th. Petersen is the starting goalie for the Women's Soccer Team, where she has played for the past four years and has currently helped lead her team to 4-3-0 record, in which she has recorded a minuscule 1.29 Goals Against Average, 53 saves, and two shutouts.

Off the field, Petersen most recently completed a study abroad program in Australia last semester and is currently writing a thesis on chiropractic treatment compared to medical treatment on migraines and lower back pain. "I would like to be a chiropractor and so I will need to go to school for another four years once I graduate." Petersen hasn't chosen a school to attend yet, but in the mean time coaching could be in the future. "I've played goalie since I was 11 so I would consider maybe eventually coaching or being a goal keeper coach."

While she has plenty of time to make decisions on her future, one thing is clear, academics are a vital part of her life. "Being a student-athlete at Wells you are reminded of how important your GPA is and how you are a student first and an athlete second. The class sizes are small and you are held accountable for the work you do. Playing soccer, you automatically know 20 or so people and many of them may have already had the same classes you're taking and they are able to help."

While the soccer season is still young, one thing is sure; with Petersen in net they will have a strong leader on the field, which will help carry the team through the rest of the season and straight into the playoffs.

The Women's Soccer Team will next take to the field on Saturday, September 27, at 3:00 pm against Keuka College at Keuka.
