PITT.-BRADFORD DEFEATS WOMEN’S SOCCER

(Aurora, N.Y.)─  The Wells College women's soccer team fell 3-1 to the Pitt-Bradford Panthers on a rain soaked Thursday afternoon in Aurora. Danielle Zeamer (Manheim, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) paced the Panthers with two goals, while goalie Alisa Cornell (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast) finished with four saves in the victory. Paige Stone (Madison, N.Y./Madison) scored the lone goal for the Express, while Megan Lawrence (Scipion Center, N.Y./Cayuga C.C.) finished with four saves in goal. The loss drops the Express to 1-4 on the year, while the Panthers improve to 2-4.

The Panthers came out aggressive to start the game, scoring on a goal by Courtney McNeight (Ellicottville, N.Y./Ellicottville) 4:53 into the first half. Bradford continued to pressure the Wells offense as Zeamer found the back of the net twice in a span of 5:20 to open up a 3-0 lead for the Panthers. With the Express down by three goals and still 19 minutes to play in the half it looked as though the rout might be on but the Express defense stepped up, holding the Panthers to zero shots the remainder of the first half.

The tables would turn in the second half as the Express defense began to take command, holding the Panthers to just one shot and one corner kick the entire 45 minutes. While the defense held the Panthers in check, the offense would break through at 79:13, drawing a foul in the box that sent Stone to the line for a penalty kick. Stone buried the shot trimming the Panther lead to 3-1.

Despite the offensive effort from the Express, the three goal lead would prove to be too large a deficit to overcome as the Panthers held on for the win.

The Express return to action this weekend as they travel to Massachusetts to take on Pine Manor College on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. in Chestnut Hill.
