WELLS ROLLS TO SHUTOUT VICTORY

(Aurora, N.Y.)─ The Wells College women's soccer team scored two second half goals en route to a 2-0 victory over Wilson College in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action Saturday afternoon in Aurora. Alanna Verderber (Sharon Springs, N.Y./Sharon Springs) and Rebecca Furman (Parkland, Fla./Marjory Stoneman) each scored, while Megan Lawrence (Scipio Center, N.Y./Cayuga C.C.) finished with four saves to earn the shutout victory for the Express. The win moves the Express to 3-10 (3-4 NEAC) on the season, while the Phoenix of Wilson fall to 1-10 (1-6 NEAC).
 
Despite a scoreless first half, the Wells offense peppered Wilson goaltender Kathryn Murphy with 12 shots, while the defense held the Phoenix to just one shot on goal.
 
The Express continued to dominate Wilson in the second half, snapping a scoreless tie in the 55th minute. Murphy would make the initial save on a shot by Paige Stone (Madison, N.Y./Madison) but, Stone corralled the rebound and floated a pass over to Verderber who headed the pass into the goal for a 1-0 lead.
 
Ten minutes later, Furman put the Express up by two goals, scoring on a penalty shot goal after being brought down in the box by the Phoenix goalie just moments earlier.
 
It was a dominating performance for the Express, who pounded the Wilson goal with 30 shots, while holding the Phoenix to just five shots on goal.
 
Wells returns to action tomorrow against NEAC opponent The College of St. Elizabeth at 12:00 p.m. in Aurora.
