ST. ELIZABETH SINKS EXPRESS IN DOUBLE OT

SOMERSET, N.J. – The College of St. Elizabeth scored four minutes into the second overtime, topping the Wells College Express 2-1 in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action Sunday afternoon in Somerset, N.J. Cassidy Crane (Lenape Valley, N.J.) scored the game winner for Saint Elizabeth (3-10, 3-5 NEAC), while teammate Catherine De La Cruz (Bloomfield, N.J.) finished with four saves in net. Shannon Blanford (Fayetteville, N.Y.) scored the lone goal for the Express (4-8, 2-4 NEAC), while Cassie Smythe (Eden, N.Y.) finished with ten saves in the loss.

Blanford put the Express ahead in the 23rd minute. Drawing a foul inside the box, the Express would be awarded a penalty shot. Blanford -- selected to take the shot -- would have her initial shot turned away by De La Cruz, however, the rebound kicked back out to Blanford who buried her second shot for 1-0 lead.

The two teams remained scoreless well into the second half. Smythe continued to come up big for the Express, turning away the first 10 shots on goal, including four in the second half. St. Elizabeth finally beat Smythe in the 87th minute. Valerie Lasko (Bound Brook, N.J.) chested a cross from Kelly O'Dell (Stewartsville, N.J.) into the net, tying the game at one with less than three minutes to play.

The two teams remained deadlocked after the first overtime, with Saint Elizabeth registering the only shot on goal. It wouldn't be until the second overtime and the 104th minute that the game would be decided. Amy Rowe (Butler, N.J.) sent a corner kick into the box and Crane redirected the shot past Smythe for the game winning goal.

Saint Elizabeth held the advantage in shots on goal (13-8) and corner kicks (8-1).

The Express return to action on Saturday when they take on NEAC rival SUNY IT at 3 pm in Aurora.
