Blanford Pots Two, Lifting Express Over Hawks 2-0

AURORA, N.Y. – Sophomore Shannon Blanford (Fayetteville, N.Y.) scored both Express goals as the Wells College women's soccer team posted a 2-0 blanking of the Hawks of Hilbert College Wednesday afternoon at the North Athletic Field. With the victory, the Express even their overall record at 1-1 while the Hawks fall to 1-2 overall on the year following the non-conference conference.

Blanford's first goal came at 34:54 of the first half, as junior defenseman Lindsey Bush (Averill Park, N.Y.) sent a through ball up the middle of the field. Evading the last defender, Blanford shot unopposed on Hawks goaltender Erin Smith for her first goal of the season and the 15th of her career. Bush also recorded her first collegiate point on the play.

Prior to Blanford's strike, the Hawks had held the Express scoreless dating back to Oct. 28, 2003. The scoreless streak had spanned six games and also marks the first victory for Wells College against the Hawks dating back to the 1999-00 season.

She later recorded the second goal of the game only 11:52 into the second half, scoring unassisted to increase the Hawks lead to two goals. Only a sophomore, Blanford has scored two goals in a game four times in her career, most recently against Wilson on Oct. 16, 2011. With 38 total shots in the contest, the Express recorded the most shots in one game dating back to the start of the 2009 season.

Wells goaltender Ashley Roser (Taberg, N.Y.) recorded her first collegiate victory in net for the Express, turning aside all seven shots on goal that she faced. Smith (0-2) drew her second loss of the season, despite turning aside 22-of-24 shots on goal.

The Express return to action Saturday, Sept. 8 as they host the Nittany Lions of Penn State Berks in a 12:00 p.m. contest.
