Women’s Soccer Edged By Green Mountain, 2-1

CANTON, N.Y. – Despite a goal from junior Shannon Blanford (Fayetteville, N.Y.), the Wells College women's soccer team posted a 2-1 loss to Green Mountain College Saturday afternoon on the campus of SUNY Canton. The Express fall to 0-1 on the season while Green Mountain (1-0) picks up their first victory since Oct. 20, 2011 against Lyndon State College, a span of 16 games.

Green Mountain struck first as Lauren Nesshoever forced home a feed from Allison Wadsworth in the game's 30th minute to place the Eagles on the board. Wadsworth later answered with the game-winning strike as she scored off of a direct kick just outside of the 18 yard box. Blanford's goal was sandwiched between the two Green Mountain strikes and was her 22nd career goal – she now moves to sole possession of sixth place all-time in program history in goal scoring.

Express goalkeeper Kylie Nishioka (Encinitas, Calif.) made seven saves in the losing effort. Kim Simonetti turned aside 5-of-6 shots on net that she faced to earn the victory for Green Mountain. Cumulatively, the Eagles out-shot the Express by a 10-to-8 margin and also possessed a 6-to-5 advantage on corner kicks.

Wells returns to action Sunday, Sept. 1 as they face-off against SUNY Canton in a 3:00 p.m. contest on the road. The Express open their home calendar on Saturday, Sept. 7 as they host the Mustangs of Morrisville State College at 2:00 p.m. Stay up to date with the latest news directly from the Wells College athletic department by "liking" us on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/WellsExpress) and subscribing to our Twitter account (http://www.twitter.com/WellsExpress).
