Women's Soccer Silences Wilson, 2-0

AURORA, N.Y. – Junior Shannon Blanford (Fayetteville, N.Y.) scored both goals for the Wells College women's soccer team in a 2-0 victory over the Phoenix of Wilson College Saturday afternoon at the North Athletic Field. Wells (2-7) not only earned their second victory of the season, but also picked up the 150th victory for the women's soccer program in its 34 year history. The Express improve to 2-1 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play while the Phoenix (2-7) fall to 0-5 in league play.

Blanford scored her third and fourth goals of the season, respectively, to account for her team's offense. Her first goal, scored at 42:10, was unassisted as she snaked her way through the Wilson defense and tucked the ball within the left post for the goal. Her goal in the 73rd minute was assisted by sophomore Karley Raczynski (Fonda, N.Y.), who fed Blanford with a right-to-left cross at the top of the box for the second Wells goal.

Sophomore Heather Hiltbrand (Fayetteville, N.Y.) recorded the most shots by any Wells player on record through the 2008 season, shattering her previous career-high mark of 11 set on Oct. 27, 2012 against Cobleskill St. With two goals on the afternoon, Blanford moves into sole possession of fourth place all-time in Wells history with 65 points (25-15=65) – she trails only Paige Stone '13 who holds the modern-day record of 82 points via 34 goals and 15 assists.

In her first collegiate game as a goalkeeper, freshman Olivia Baum (Summerville, S.C.) picked up her first collegiate victory and shutout with her nine save performance over the Phoenix. Teniera Prioleau falls to 2-7 overall on the year for Wilson, allowing two goals on 10 shots on net.

Wells now boasts a 15-0 record against Wilson since their first meeting on Oct. 7, 2000. Since Sept. 15, 2002, the Express have allowed only one goal to Wilson while outscoring the Phoenix by a 73-to-4 margin since 2000.

The Express return to action Sunday, Sept. 29 as they host the Bison of Gallaudet University in a 1:00 p.m. contest at the North Athletic Field.
