Every Friday throughout the summer of 2014, the Wells College Department of Athletics website will look back at the "year that was". Starting with field hockey on Friday, May 16, a comprehensive "season in review" for each of Wells' 14 NCAA Division III varsity sports will be posted, giving fans not only a look back but also a look forward to the upcoming season of play.

• Field Hockey (05/16/14)

The Wells College women's soccer team will begin its 35th season as a varsity sport in Aurora in 2014. Head Coach Mara Primmer will enter her first season as bench boss of the Express looking to guide her team to their first North Eastern Athletic Conference postseason appearance dating back to the 2009 season. The first coach in team history tasked with only coaching women's soccer, Primmer will look to build a strong base of recruits on a yearly basis.

• IT'S ACADEMIC: Junior Shannon Blanford (Fayetteville, N.Y.) earned Capital One Academic All-District® First Team honors for her academic and athletic prowess in 2013, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced following the season. Blanford, the first student-athlete from Wells College to be recognized with the prestigious award, was selected by the members of CoSIDA as they recognized the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.

• CLIMBING THE RANKS: Blanford scored both of her team's goals in a 2-0 victory againts Wilson on Sept. 28. The two goals propelled Blanford into sole possession of fourth place all-time in Wells history with 65 points (25-15=65) at that point in the season. Entering her junior season, Blanford has registered 75 points via 29 goals and 17 assists (29-17=75) and is only seven points away from tying Paige Stone '13 for the modern day point scoring record of 82 points.

• EIGHT IS GREAT: By scoring three goals and two assists for eight points (3-2=8) on Sept. 29 against Gallaudet, Blanford not only set a career high, but registered the second-highest point total by any Wells player since the school joined the NCAA in 1986. The modern day single game point scoring record is held by Adora LaRoche '01 – LaRoche scored four goals and added an assist for eight points (4-1=8) against Wilson College on Sept. 16, 2001, a 7-0 Wells victory.

• IF IT'S 'THREE', IT'S FOR ME: With Wells trailing by a 2-1 margin after the first 45 minutes against SUNY Cobleskill on Sept. 14, sophomore Heather Hiltbrand (Fayetteville, N.Y.) Hiltbrand scored the next three goals of the game to place Wells ahead for good by a 4-2 score. The first hat trick of her career, Hiltbrand's trifecta was the first by a member of the Express since Stone scored three against Wilson on Oct. 13, 2012. Additionally, it was the first hat trick scored in a single half since Stone racked up three first half goals in 15:27 against Gallaudet on Sept. 25, 2011.

• SHE'S THE BAUM: Freshman Olivia Baum (Summerville, S.C.) made the most saves by a Wells College women's soccer goalkeeper since 1994 against the SUNY Institute of Technology on Oct. 12. The Wildcats fired a whopping 52 shots in the contest that included 31 in the final stanza. Baum was able to turn aside 25 shots faced, the most stopped by a Wells goalkeeper since Christy Gunderson '95 made 27 saves against Utica on Sept. 20, 1994. In individual game history, Baum's 25 shots are tied for 11th place all-time in Wells history – the all-time single game record is 41 saves (Sheila Carroll '88, at Nazareth, 10/07/85).

• SALUTE THE CAPTAIN: Senior captain Lindsey Bush (Averill Park, N.Y.) was selected as a North Eastern Athletic Conference Third Team All-Conference player in recognition of her performance for the Wells College women's soccer team during the 2013 season. A first-time winner of league honors, Bush set career-highs for the Express as a key member of the team's backfield. She scored two goals for four points (2-0=4) – on offense, each of her goals were of the game-winning variety while on defense, she ranked second amongst all defensive players with 1,546 minutes logged on the field.
