Women's Soccer Edged By SUNY Canton, 3-2

AURORA, N.Y. – Despite goals from senior Heather Hiltbrand (Fayetteville, N.Y.) and sophomore Yanna Ososkalo (Lyme, N.Y.), the Wells College women's soccer team fell to SUNY Canton by a 3-2 margin on Tuesday at the South Athletic Field. The Kangaroos move to 1-0 on the young season while Wells dips to 0-1 on the year.

Kristina DiNardo opened play with an unassisted tally only 9:30 into the contest and went on to score the game-winning goal at 52:40. Wells held a dramatic advantage in shots taken, firing 31 total in the contest, while the visitors mustered only 14 but made three of them count.

Trailing 1-0, Hiltbrand carried the ball directly up the middle of the field and sent home a ball from sophomore Madison Maloney (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) for her team's first equalizer of the afternoon. A Wells turnover on defense led to SUNY Canton's second goal before Ososkalo chipped home a through-ball from sophomore Sarah Halstead (Fulton, N.Y.) to knot the score at two. Despite firing 17 shots alone in the second half, Wells was unable to tie the game.

Wells backstop Quinn Doubet (Virgil, N.Y.) made seven saves in the loss, allowing three goals. Kelsi Gilbert, in her first collegiate game for the Kangaroos, made an impressive 13 saves that included several stops on breakaways. Wells also fell victim to bad luck on two occasions, ringing the crossbar in the opening stanza before hitting two posts on one shot later in the contest.
