Women's Swimming In Fourth Place Entering Final Day

COBLESKILL, N.Y. – The Wells College women's swimming program, competing at the North Eastern Athletic Conference Championship meet for the second day out of three, enters the final day of competition in fourth place out of six teams with 234 total points. The Express are looking to claim their fourth-straight conference title with a strong conclusion Sunday afternoon on the campus of SUNY Cobleskill.

Freshman Kaitlyn Schwend (San Marcos, Calif.) continued her stretch of strong performances in the championship meet, placing second out of 11 swimmers in the 100 Yard Butterfly (1:03.87) to draw 13 points for the Express. Schwend was only .12 seconds away from beating Jennifer Ingold's program record of 1:03.76, set originally on Feb. 20, 1992 at the New York State Championships. Freshman Samantha Hall (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) set a career-low time in the same event (1:23.51).

Senior Olive Touron (Cato, N.Y.) posted a strong finish in the 200 Yard Freestyle, touching the wall in 2:12.64 to earn 13 points with a second place finish. Junior Nina Daniels (Pittsford, N.Y,) trailed Touron by only one place, finishing with a time of 2:15.03.

Sophomore Amelia Flint (Bath, N.Y.) completed the 100 Yard Backstroke in 1:08.76, placing third amongst the crowded field and setting a career-best time in the process. Her fast time also ranks as the fifth-fastest time by any Wells swimmer in program history. Classmate Gina Ross-Detro (Geneva, N.Y.) secured a time of 1:16.80 in the 100 Yard Breaststroke, improving from her preliminary time by over one second.

The foursome of Flint, Ross-Detro, Schwend and Touron completed the 200 Yard Medley Relay with a time of 2:04.75, trailing the first place time by just over six seconds. Their time is the fourth-fastest time in program history. The 800 Yard Freestyle Relay time of 10:12.99, posted by Flint, Daniels, Schwend and Touron, cracked the all-time top 10 list at Wells.

Wells concludes the three-day NEAC Championship on Sunday, Feb. 15 as they take to the pool at 10 a.m. for the preliminary round. The finals will commence at 5 p.m., an hour earlier than the two days prior, on the campus of SUNY Cobleskill.
