Women’s Volleyball Wraps Up 2012 Elmira Invitational

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Wells College women's volleyball team posted a 3-1 loss to the Golden Eagles of The College at Brockport and a 3-0 loss to the Hawks of Hartwick College Saturday afternoon on the campus of Elmira College Saturday afternoon. Following the tournament, the Express' overall record stands at 1-6 while Brockport and Hartwick sport overall records of  4-5 and 2-6, respectively.

Against Brockport, the Express recorded a 25-21 third set victory, but eventually lost to the Golden Eagles by a 3-1 final score. Zakarra Butts (Cortland, N.Y.), Katie Curtin (Cassville, N.Y.) and Gina Cairns (Delhi, N.Y.) each recorded six kills apiece while Butts posted a team-leading .385 hitting percentage. Setter Taryn Heath (Homer, N.Y.) contributed 21 assists and four digs while Cairns led all Express players with 13 digs to her credit. Libero Nicole Loeven (Pawling, N.Y.) chipped in 12 digs of her own while Curtin added a team-leading four service aces.

In her first complete game of action on the year, outside hitter Caitlyn Copfer (Clinton, N.Y.) recorded four kills alongside only one error for a .375 hitting percentage, ranking second on the team. Team captain Gina Laungani (Saint Martin) also saw action for the first time this season.

The final match of the tournament saw the Express fall to the Hawks of Hartwick College by a 3-0 final. Curtin led the team with five kills to her credit while Heath and Stephanie Leung (Brooklyn, N.Y.) were the only two players to record a positive hitting percentage. Heath also contributed eight assists while Loeven led all players defensively with nine digs. Curtin also hammered home a team-best four service aces in the second match.

The Express return to action as they face-off against the Hawks of Hilbert College in a 7:00 p.m. contest on Wednesday, Sept. 12.
