Volleyball Swept At SUNYIT Invitational

MARCY, N.Y. – The Wells College women's volleyball team was swept by the Panthers of SUNY Old Westbury and the Gators of Sage College Saturday afternoon at the SUNYIT Invitational, held at the Wildcat Field House. With the two losses, the Express fall to 1-14 overall on the season following the non-conference tilts.

Despite opening the day with a 25-23 opening set victory against the Panthers, the Express went on to lose the three remaining sets by scores of 25-22, 25-16 and 25-14. Wells College hit a combined .103 in the first set and a .207 in the second set, but committed 14 errors in the third and fourth stanzas en route to the defeat.

Freshman Zakarra Butts (Cortland, N.Y.) posted a team-best .261 hitting percentage against the Panthers, the second highest hitting percentage on the season for the Express. She led the team with eight kills to her credit while setter Taryn Heath (Homer, N.Y.) set up 20 of the Express' 27 kills. Defensively, Katie Curtin (Cassville, N.Y.) posted 10 digs on the match.

Jocelyn Small and Rayn Brown each posted nine kills and only one error to lead the team. Kimberly Catania assisted 25 of the team's 36 kills while Allie Giancola recorded 30 digs defensively.

The Express fell to Sage College by set scores of 25-13, 25-13 and 25-9 as the Gators improved to 14-4 overall on the year. Butts hit a collective .364 in 11 total attacks, not recording an error. She also converted two service aces in the second game of the afternoon. As a team, the Express hit a collective -.236 and made 29 errors alongside only 12 kills. Heath posted seven assists while four players on the Express earned five or more digs.

Taking advantage of the 29 Express errors were the Gators, who notched a .333 hitting percentage with 31 kills and only eight errors. Jillian Schwab led the way with seven kills and a team-best .545 hitting percentage. Joanie Cooney posted 28 assists while two players recorded 10 digs for the Gators.

The Express return to action Tuesday, Oct. 2 as they host the Storm of Keuka College in a 7:00 p.m. contest at the Frances Tarlton Farenthold Field House.
