Women’s Volleyball Competes At Ithaca Tournament

ITHACA, N.Y. – Freshman outside hitter Katie Curtin (Cassville, N.Y.) led all Express players on the afternoon with nine kills in two matches as the Wells College women's volleyball team posted two consecutive 3-0 defeats at the hands of Fredonia State University and Saint Lawrence University Friday evening at Ben Light Gymnasium. With the non-conference losses, the Express fall to 2-21 overall on the year.

In the day's opening match against the Blue Devils of Fredonia State University, Wells posted losses by set scores of 12-25, 17-25 and 10-25. Both Gina Cairns (Delhi, N.Y.) and Curtin posted four kills apiece to lead the team while Taryn Heath (Homer, N.Y.) contributed 12 of the team's 13 assists. Defensively, libero Nicole Loeven (Pawling, N.Y.) recorded nine digs as all but one player recorded at least one dig on the match.

As a team, Fredonia State hit a collective .268 with Hannah Manning leading the team with eight kills as opposed to only one error for a .467 hitting percentage. Kelly Edlinger assisted 29 of the team's 35 total kills while also recording double-digit dig totals with 11. As a team, Fredonia out-blocked the Express by an 8-to-3 spread.

Wells College opened the second game of the afternoon against Saint Lawrence with a close 25-17 opening set loss, but went on to drop the remaining sets by 8-25 and 13-25 scores, respectively. Curtin's five kills led the team while the Express only managed 11 kills on 72 attacks. Heath once again led the squad with seven assists while Curtin posted a team-best six digs. Cairns also hammered home the team's only service ace in the second contest.

Alexis Brown hit a team-high .429, converting 12 of her attacks for kills. Two players recorded double-digit assist totals, with Anna Kassab teaming up with Jenna Street for 18 and 12 assists, respectively. Defensively, Katie Prue notched 10 digs while Kate Taylor added one solo block and combined with other members of the front line for four block assists.
