Women’s Volleyball Swept To Open Oswego St. Invitational

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Despite freshman Meredith Kadjeski's (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) 22 kills on the afternoon, the Wells College women's volleyball team was swept in both matches to start the Oswego State Volleyball Invitational Friday afternoon at the Max Ziel Gymnasium. Wells dropped back-to-back 3-0 contests against the Pioneers of Utica College and the Pacers of Marywood University, Wells falls to 1-6 overall on the year.

Against Utica, Wells posted a 3-0 loss via set scores of 28-26, 25-12 and 25-23. Kadjeski led all Wells players with 11 kills against only four errors, hitting a collective .226 in the three set match. Sophomore Zakarra Butts (Cortland, N.Y.) racked up four kills in only nine attempts in the losing effort, adding four digs and one of two Wells service aces.

Primary setter Taryn Heath (Truxton, N.Y.) assisted 15 of her team's 27 kills while Jessilyn Artaho-Aki (Ka'paa, Hawaii) recorded 15 digs defensively for Wells. Freshman Stephanie Parker (Dryden, N.Y.) converted seven kills for Wells to rank second overall on the team in that category while classmate Nadine Pershyn (Buffalo, N.Y.) ranked second with seven digs.

For Utica, Brandi Blaszak posted a team-leading 10 kills against only one error, hitting .409 on the match. Lora Allen set up 18 of her team's 42 kills while Briona Enny racked up 21 digs for the Pioneers.

Against the Pacers of Marywood University in match two, the Express lost by set scores of 25-21, 25-17 and 25-23. For the second-straight game, Kadjeski hammered home 11 kills and hit .348 on the match, committing only three errors. Heath set up 24 of her team's 29 kills while Pershyn led the way defensively with 10 digs. Butts remained steady offensively for Wells, committing only one error in 15 total attack attempts with seven kills.

Marywood utilized 10 kills from Ashley Zalewski to edge the Express, who recorded only two less kills but committed seven more errors. Kelly Chadwick was responsible for all but one of her team's 30 assists and Rachel Tollett was strong on the backline, notching 22 digs.

Wells returns to action Saturday, Sept. 14 as they wrap up the Oswego State Volleyball Invitational against the host Lakers of Oswego State College and St. Lawrence University at noon.
