Women’s Volleyball Wins Five Set Thriller vs. Cazenovia

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Trailing by two sets, the Wells College women's volleyball team rattled off three-straight set victories to capture a 3-2 win against North Eastern Athletic Conference rival Cazenovia College Saturday afternoon on the campus of Morrisville State College. In the second game of the afternoon, Wells was dispatched by SUNY Cobleskill in four sets. Following the day's action, Wells' overall record stands at 4-14 while their league record improves to 2-4.

Wells captured the five set victory via set scores of 22-25, 24-26, 25-19, 25-17 and 15-6. After making eight errors in the second set, the Wells offense generated only five additional errors in the remaining three sets en route to the victory. In the final three sets, Wells recorded 27 kills against only five errors in 76 total attacks.

Freshman Meredith Kadjeski (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) posted 19 kills to lead the team in that category while also posting the second-most kills by any Wells player in one game. Sophomore Taryn Heath (Truxton, N.Y.), the primary setter for the Express, assisted 30-of-41 kills while libero Nadine Pershyn (Buffalo, N.Y.) recorded 15 digs defensively for Wells.

For Cazenovia, Juliann Heigel led the way with 15 kills against only six errors for a .225 hitting percentage. Samantha McCarthy assisted 40-of-46 kills for the Wildcats while Elizabeth Harten led the way defensively with 15 digs. Cazenovia posted 10 service aces on the afternoon, opposing the Wells' team total of eight.

Versus the Fighting Tigers of SUNY Cobleskill, Wells attempted a similar comeback after trailing by two sets early but ultimately dropped a four setter to their opponent via scores of 15-25, 20-25, 25-23 and 19-25.

Kadjeski eclipsed her single-game kill total from the earlier five set match against Cazenovia, hammering home 22 kills in what now stands as the second most all-time in a single game for the Express. Heath assisted 33 of her team's 40 kills while libero Nicole Loeven (Pawling, N.Y.) was able to rack up 10 digs for Wells. Kadjeski also notched four service aces en route to the four set loss.

The Fighting Tigers utilized 13 kills from Amber Baker en route to the victory. Kim Cordova racked up nine of her team's 32 digs while Katie Yang and Casey Holbert each reached double-digit assist totals. Kady Porterfield notched a team-high three solo blocks as Wells was out-blocked by a 7-to-4 margin.

Wells will face-off against Medaille and Messiah this Friday, Oct. 11 within the Ben Light Gymnasium on the campus of Ithaca College starting at 3:30 p.m. The Express will battle the host Bombers at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12.
