Women’s Volleyball Splits Saturday Double Dip

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Wells College women's volleyball team picked up a 3-1 victory over the Nittany Lions of Penn St.-Abington on Saturday before falling to the host Bison of Gallaudet University by a 3-0 margin to conclude North Eastern Athletic Conference Pool Play on Saturday. Following Saturday's action, Wells sports a 5-19 overall record and a 3-6 record in league play.

Wells was able to sneak past the Nittany Lions via set scores of 25-18, 25-22, 21-25 and 25-21. Freshman Meredith Kadjeski (Trumansburg, Pa.) led all players with 21 kills, committing only seven errors in 46 total attacks for a .304 hitting percentage. Sophomore Zakarra Butts (Cortland, N.Y.) made only one error, hammering home nine kills in 19 total chances for a .421 hitting percentage.

Primary setter Taryn Heath (Truxton, N.Y.) assisted 41 of her team's 48 kills, posting the second-highest total of her career. Defensively, six players tallied double-digit dig totals as sophomore Gina Cairns (Delhi, N.Y.) led all players with 15 to her credit. Libero Nicole Loeven (Pawling, N.Y.) contributed 14 of her own while freshman Antonaia Merritt (Albany, N.Y.) set a career-high mark with 13 digs defensively. With 79 team digs, Wells has posted the second-most combined digs in team history.

Sam Amaro racked up 20 kills in the four set match for Penn St.-Abington, committing only six errors in 55 chances to lead the team. Cricket Lennon assisted 35 kills for the Nittany Lions while Victoria Lohman notched 31 digs in the losing effort. Amaro also racked up 21 digs for the losing team.

In the night cap, the Bison of Gallaudet University were able to quickly dispatch the Express in straight sets (25-8, 25-16, 25-15). As a team, Wells posted 12 digs as Butts and Kadjeski each recorded four for the Express. Heath assisted 10 of the 12 team kills for Wells while Loeven led the way on defense with seven digs.

Kali Frowick hammered home 12 kills while Lane Peters forced home five service aces for Gallaudet. Kate Fetzer and Frowick tallied 15 and 14 digs, respectively, while TraciAnn Hoglind set up 31 kills.

Wells returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 23 as they travel to Keuka Park, N.Y. to play Keuka College in a 7:00 p.m. road game.
