Women’s Volleyball Swept By Hilbert, Houghton

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Despite 15 kills across both matches by sophomore Zakarra Butts (Cortland, N.Y.), the Wells College women's volleyball team posted back-to-back 3-0 losses to the Hawks of Hilbert College and the host Highlanders of Houghton College Saturday afternoon. With the losses, Wells falls to 5-22 overall on the season after the non-conference tilts.

Against Hilbert in the day's opener, Wells was dispatched in straight sets via scores of 25-19, 25-19 and 25-20. Butts and freshman Stephanie Parker (Dryden, N.Y.) accumulated seven kills apiece while primary setter Taryn Heath (Truxton, N.Y.) assisted 19 of her team's 24 kills. Defensively, sophomore Nicole Loeven (Pawling, N.Y.) recorded 16 digs to lead her team in that category. Loeven's total of 16 is the second-most she has accumulated in a match this season.

For Hilbert, Allegra Johnson led the way with 14 kills. Shannon Memminger led all players with 30 assists while four players reached double-digit dig totals for the Hawks. Memminger and Jordan Botsford each had three service aces while Kayla Lewis threw up three solo blocks and a block assists in the match.

Butts posted eight kills in a 3-0 loss to Houghton in the second match of the afternoon. Houghton secured the victory in straight sets by scores of 25-15, 25-16 and 25-17. Parker ranked second with six kills to her credit while Heath assisted 18-of-26 kills for Wells. Defensively, Butts and Loeven each tied for the team lead with seven with the former leading the way with two block assists.

For her effort, Butts was named to the All-Tournament Team as she was recognized following a poll of the tournament's coaches.

Meagan Palm and Hattie Burgher each had seven kills for Houghton while Jaime Green had 27 assists. Defensively, Laurel Wroblicky had 21 digs that were paired with a team-best three service aces.

Wells returns to action this Tuesday, Oct. 29 as they face-off against Ithaca College in a 6:00 p.m. road contest within the Ben Light Gymnasium.
