Women’s Volleyball Wraps Up Season At Oswego State

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Wells College women's volleyball team wrapped up their second season as a varsity program Saturday afternoon at the Max Ziel Gymnasium on the campus of Oswego State College. In the day's opener, the Express lost in straight sets to the Storm of Keuka College (25-18, 25-12, 25-18) before dropping three straight to the host Lakers (25-16, 25-17, 25-15).

Against North Eastern Athletic Conference rival Keuka, Wells saw a team-leading five kills from sophomore Gina Cairns (Delhi, N.Y.). Primary setter Taryn Heath (Truxton, N.Y.) assisted 13 of her team's 20 kills while freshman Stephanie Parker (Dryden, N.Y.) led all players defensively with 13 digs to her credit – libero Nicole Loeven (Pawling, N.Y.) was second with 12 on the afternoon.

For Keuka, Kaitlin Burke led the way with seven kills while Jillian Nolan assisted 14 of her team's 32 kills. Defensively, Taylor Smith posted 24 digs against the Express in three sets while Paige Golden and Nolan each posted 11 digs – as a team, Keuka recorded 81 digs against Wells.

In the final match of the season, Wells posted a 3-0 loss to the Lakers of Oswego State College. Sophomore Zakarra Butts (Cortland, N.Y.) racked up eight kills on 13 total attacks for a team-best .385 hitting percentage. Heath once again assisted the majority of her team's kills, tallying 18 helpers on 25 total team kills. Defensively, Butts also made an impact with her seven digs to lead the team in that category.

The Lakers hit a collective .351 on the afternoon, committing only nine errors in 74 total attacks while hammering home 35 kills. Kelsey Dillon, Meaghan Puff and Stephanie Bailey each racked up six kills while Lauren Edwards and Puff assisted 14 and 12 kills, respectively. Defensively, Edwards led the way with nine digs on the match.

In 2013, the women's volleyball team made large strides in their second season of modern-era volleyball in Aurora. They totaled 864 kills in 2013, greatly improving from their 2012 mark of 657 kills. Additionally, Wells improved their kills per set (8.23), total attack attempts (3,273), attack percentage (.090), assists (800), service aces (183), digs (1,316) and digs per set (12.53).
