Women’s Volleyball Competes At SUNY Canton Invitational

CANTON, N.Y. – The Wells College women's volleyball team posted back-to-back losses at the SUNY Canton Invitational on Saturday. Following a 3-0 loss to Houghton College in the opener via set scores of 21-25, 22-25 and 14-25, the Express battled Potsdam St. to a five set loss (19-25, 25-20, 15-25, 25-10, 12-15). Exiting play this weekend, Wells' overall record stands at 1-2 across their non-conference schedule.

Junior Vashti Nettles (Portland, Ore.) and freshman Anuhea Leite-Ah Yo (Hilo, Hawaii) each led the way with seven kills for the Express against Houghton. Senior Taryn Heath (Truxton, N.Y.) assisted 18 of her team's 27 kills while freshman Olyvia Brazier (Stony Brook, N.Y.) recorded 12 digs defensively to lead the way. With four solo blocks, Nettles tied the program records held by Leilani Yasutake '16 and junior Zakarra Butts (Cortland, N.Y.).

Houghton saw at least nine kills come from three different players en route to a .273 team hitting percentage. Hattie Burgher led players from both teams with 12 kills against only three errors while Anna Coryell posted 25 assists alongside seven digs. Defensively, Laurel Wroblicky collected 22 digs on the back line for Houghton in the win.

Against Potsdam St. in the final game of the afternoon, both teams traded set victories after a 25-19 first set by the Bears. In the decisive fifth set, Wells hammered home eight kills but Potsdam St. committed only one attacking error in 13 total attacks to eliminate the Express by a 15-12 set score. Sophomore Meredith Kadjeski (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) converted 12 of her 29 total attacks for kills, committing only three miscues. Heath assisted 23 kills while libero Nicole Loeven (Pawling, N.Y.) notched 13 digs.

The Bears were led by a nine kill performance by Sharon Ofori. Rachel Topf assisted 26 kills while Sloane Campbell and Chelsea Sunday registered 17 and 16 digs, respectively.

Wells returns to action Friday, Sept. 5 as they host Keystone College in a 5:00 p.m. contest at the Frances Tarlton Farenthold Athletic Wing. Live video for the contest is available by clicking here.
