Women's Volleyball On Losing End Of Five-Set Thriller

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Wells College women's volleyball team posted a 3-0 loss to Oswego State University before losing a five-set contest to St. Lawrence University on Friday at the Oswego State Volleyball Invitational. After falling to Oswego State in straight sets (25-18, 25-18, 25-16), the Express battled the Saints in a thrilling five-setter (17-25, 25-22, 25-20, 20-25, 5-15). Following Friday's double dip, Wells' overall record stands at 3-5.

In the opener versus the Lakers, Wells saw a team-best four kills from junior Vashti Nettles (Long Beach, Calif.) and freshman Anuhea Leite-Ah Yo (Hilo, Hawaii). Senior Taryn Heath (Truxton, N.Y.) set up 11 of her team's 17 kills while freshman Olyvia Brazier (Stony Brook, N.Y.) registered 17 digs defensively.

Wells committed as many errors as they did kills in each of the first two sets of the match. Despite hammering home eight kills in the third set, the Express also committed seven errors to allow the host Lakers to capture the 25-16 set victory.

Against St. Lawrence, Wells dropped the first set 25-17 but later rallied to capture the next two sets 25-22 and 25-20, respectively. The Saints, however, captured a 25-20 fourth set before Wells dropped the decisive fifth set 15-5.

Nettles and Leite-Ah Yo once again partnered to record 13 kills each. Heath racked up 30 assists while Leite-Ah Yo picked up 11 digs defensively for the Express. As a team, Wells racked up 12 service aces and saw five total from junior Zakarra Butts (Cortland, N.Y.). Heath fell only one dig short of a double-double, tallying nine digs on defense.

Wells returns to action Saturday, Sept. 13 as they face-off against Alfred and Bard to conclude the Oswego State Volleyball Tournament. The first match of the day for Wells kicks off at high noon.
