WVB Defeats King's (Pa.), Falls To Carnegie Mellon

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Wells College women's volleyball team posted a 3-0 loss to Carnegie Mellon University before winning a 3-1 match against King's (Pa.) College on Saturday to conclude the Ithaca College Volleyball Invitational. Following the weekend's action, Wells' overall record stands at 16-8.

Wells fell to Carnegie Mellon in straight sets via scores of 25-13, 25-18 and 25-19. The Express dispatched King's (Pa.) in four sets (25-10, 19-25, 25-23, 25-16). Junior Vashti Nettles (Long Beach, Calif.) had a solid all-around afternoon for Wells, posting 17 total kills and committing only one error for a .444 hitting percentage. She also led the team with five total blocks.

In the Carnegie Mellon match, Nettles racked up nine kills on 17 errorless attacks. Freshman Eliza Schwab (Hartland, N.Y.) assisted 17 of her team's 26 kills while classmate Olyvia Brazier (Stony Brook, N.Y.) registered 10 digs for Wells. Freshman Anuhea Leite-Ah Yo (Hilo, Hawaii) hammered home a team-high three service aces.

The Express rebounded from the three-set loss by hitting .250 (51-16-140) against King's (Pa.). Wells was led by Leite-Ah Yo's 13 kills while Schwab set up 33 of her team's 51 kills. Defensively, three players posted 10 or more digs, including Brazier's team-best 19. Leite-Ah Yo added 17 of her own while junior Nicole Loeven (Pawling, N.Y.) posted 10 digs defensively.

Junior Zakarra Butts (Cortland, N.Y.) posted seven kills along with only one error in 12 total attacks while Nettles hammered home eight kills on 19 total swings. Sophomore Meredith Kadjeski (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) and senior Jessilyn Artaho-Aki (Kapa'a, Hawaii) each tallied nine kills for the Express. Senior Taryn Heath (Truxton, N.Y.) continued her recent string of offensive contributions, posting three kills on four total attacks.

The Express return to action Friday, Oct. 17 as they travel to Lancaster Bible College for the third and final North Eastern Athletic Conference Crossover Weekend. Wells will play Penn St.-Abington at 6 p.m. on Friday before playing the host Chargers at 8 p.m.
