Women's Volleyball Locks Up Playoff Spot In Weekend Matches

The Wells College women's volleyball team had one win and two losses in North Eastern Athletic Conference matches hosted by SUNY Polytechnic Institute on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 22-23. Wells defeated SUNY Cobleskill in four sets and fell to SUNY Poly in three sets and Morrisville State College in five sets.

After the weekend's matches, Wells stands at 16-9 overall and 8-4 in the NEAC. Wells is in fifth place in the conference standings and has clinched a spot in the NEAC playoffs with one match remaining. Wells will host Cazenovia College in its final conference match and final regular-season home match on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. in the Schwartz Athletic Center.

Wells 3, SUNY Cobleskill 1

The Express started the weekend with a win over Cobleskill. Set scores were 23-25, 25-14, 25-15, 25-12. After dropping a close first set, Wells cruised over the next three. The turnaround got started in the second set when Wells hit an impressive percentage of .458 with 12 kills and just one error on 24 attempts. The Express closed the match with a .344 hitting percentage in the fourth set.

Anuhea Leite-Ah Yo had 10 kills and hit .268. She added a team-high 12 digs. Amanda Springer had three solo blocks. Olyvia Brazier had four aces and Kasie Stamp and Renee Bartosz each served three aces. Eliza Schwab had 21 assists and six kills.

SUNY Poly 3, Wells 0

The host Wildcats and first-place team in the NEAC won by set scores of 25-19, 25-19, 25-23. In the second set, the teams combined for 31 kills and just six errors. The third set was the second time on Saturday that Wells dropped a set by just two points.

Leite-Ah Yo again led the Express with 11 kills and 14 digs, and Meredith Kadjeski had eight kills. Ambyr Shallow served two aces. Springer had three assisted blocks, and Brazier and Schwab were in on two assisted blocks each. Schwab had 30 assists.

Morrisville 3, Wells 2

The weekend wrapped up with a five-set match against Morrisville State College on Sunday, and the second-place Mustangs won the first, third and fifth sets to claim the victory. Set scores were 25-21, 22-25, 25-17, 23-25, 15-7.

Wells hit just .063 in the match with 42 kills and 30 errors. Jackie Allen led Wells with 12 kills, and Olyvia Brazier and Anuhea Leite-Ah Yo had 10 kills each. Schwab had 36 assists. Nadine Pershyn led Wells with 19 digs, and Brazier had 12 digs. Springer had three solo blocks and Brazier had four service aces.
