Women's Volleyball Takes Five-Set Thriller

The Wells College women's volleyball team opened conference play with a come-from-behind five-set victory over Keuka College on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at the Schwartz Athletic Center. Wells rallied to win the fourth and fifth sets in the North Eastern Athletic Conference matchup. Scores were 25-14, 24-26, 20-25, 25-22, 17-15.

Wells improved to 5-4 overall on the season and 1-0 in the NEAC. Keuka is 1-8 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Freshman Rachel Anderson came through in the decisive fifth set. She had six kills and a solo block in the set. Wells built a 10-4 advantage in the fifth set, but Keuka rallied back and had two match points that Wells successfully overcame, both on kills from Anderson to earn side-outs. An attack error from Keuka and a deflected ball over the net from Wells that fell inside the court on match point gave the Express a victory.

Anderson led Wells with 18 kills and had just four errors for a .412 hitting percentage. Jackie Allen added 13 kills. Eliza Schwab had 34 assists. Four Wells players hit double-figures in digs over the five-set match led by Anuhea Leite-Ah Yo with 23. Olyvia Brazier had 17 digs, Schwab had 15 and Allen had 11.

Wells served 13 aces in the match with four from Schwab and three each from Allen and Leite-Ah Yo. Amanda Springer had one solo block and three block assists. Anderson had two block assists to go with her solo block.

Wells hit .407 in the opening set and won 25-14. Keuka took the second and third sets as Wells had 18 attack errors and just 17 kills in those sets. The Express came through in the closing sets and earned the victory.

The Express continues NEAC play with a Friday night match at SUNY Poly. Saturday, Wells will travel to Keystone College for matches against Keystone and Gwynedd Mercy.
