Cortland Edges Wells Women's Volleyball In Five Sets

The Wells College women's volleyball team stretched visiting SUNY Cortland to five sets, but fell in a back-and-forth match Tuesday, Oct. 17 at the Schwartz Athletic Center. Cortland claimed the first, third, and fifth sets to take the victory. Set scores were 25-20, 18-25, 25-23, 30-32, 15-11. Wells is now 14-11 on the year and Cortland improved to 9-13.

In the opening set, Cortland broke out to a 6-0 lead. Wells rallied to close to within 18-17, but Cortland closed the set by winning seven of the final 10 points.

Wells took the second set despite trailing 11-6 in the early going. From that point, Wells went on a 9-2 run and later in the set won five straight points to lead 21-15.

Cortland edged the third set 25-23, but Wells stayed alive by winning the fourth set 32-30. It was the longest set (by score) of the season for the Express. Wells defended two Cortland set points and sealed the fourth game by winning three straight points on a pair of Cortland attack errors and a service ace from Eliza Schwab.

The Red Dragons took the decisive fifth set powered by a 7-2 run to build an 11-6 advantage.

Olyvia Brazier led Wells with 18 kills and had a .245 hitting percentage. Jackie Allen added 13 kills, Rachel Anderson had 11, and Lakshmi Martin added nine.

Eliza Schwab surpassed the 50-assist mark for the second match in a row, with 51 assists. Schwab also served two aces.

Defensively, four players reached double-figures in digs, led by 27 from Anuhea Leite-Ah Yo. Allen had 19 digs, Brazier had 16, and Jordan Stoops had 13.

Lakshmi Martin had one solo block and two block assists. Anderson had four block assists and Amanda Springer had three.

Wells is back in North Eastern Athletic Conference play this weekend with a noon match Saturday at SUNY Cobleskill followed by a non-conference match against Alfred State at 4 p.m.
