Scharoun Named NEAC Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week

Maritza Scharoun was named the North Eastern Athletic Conference Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week today after registering 17 blocks to help the Express to a 2-1 record during the previous week.

The Wells College junior put up those numbers during 11 sets of play on the road and improved her position in four NEAC block categories to second place in NEAC total blocks with 68, NEAC solo blocks with 23, NEAC blocks-per-set at 0.96 and tied-second in NEAC block assists with 45.

Her best performance last week came in the Express' 3-0 sweep of Keuka at Houghton College on Oct. 5. In that match, Scharoun recorded eight blocks with three being solo – surpassing her season-high single match performance of seven blocks from the previous week.

Also last week, she recorded five blocks (one solo) in the team's 3-1 win at Elmira on Oct. 2 and added another four blocks (two solo) in the team's loss to Houghton on Oct. 5. During the three matches last week, Scharoun also recorded 19 kills.

Her 23 solo blocks (and counting) so far this season are a season high after recording 21 during her sophomore campaign. Her 17 blocks from last weekend that helped her earn NEAC Player of the Week honors topped her previous best week of 15 blocks - over four matches - from the team's trip to Hawaii during September.
