Cross Country Participates In Jack Daniels Invitational

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The men's and women's cross country teams from Wells College competed at the Jack Daniels Cross Country Invitational Saturday afternoon. The women's cross country team from Wells posted a fourth place team finish across the 4K course while the men's squad placed eighth in the 6K race.

The event, hosted by SUNY Cortland, is named in recognition of Dr. Jack Daniels, the current Head Coach at Wells College. Daniels served as the long-time Head Coach of Men's and Women's Track and Field/Cross Country at Cortland and racked up seven NCAA Division III national championships in women's cross country.

For the 20th-straight race, junior Emily Middlebrook (Newark, N.Y.) led all Express runners and placed ninth amongst the highly-competitive field. Middlebrook eclipsed her 2012 time at the Jack Daniels Invitational by two seconds, finishing in 15:46.4 and running at a 6:21 pace for Wells.

For the fourth-straight race, freshman Deaven Theriault (Ludlow, Mass.) finished second amongst Express runners and placed 17th amongst all runners with a time of 15:58.6, a pace of 6:26. Sophomore Katie Lamanna (Constableville, N.Y.) was 47th amongst the field, completing the course in 17:51.2.

Junior Anastasia Benson (Rockford, Ill.) checked in with a time of 18:32.9, placing 56th out of 84 runners in the race. Freshmen Jenn VanWormer (Phoenix, N.Y.) and Bailey Brown (Marcy, N.Y.) clocked in at 18:47.6 and 19:51.9, respectively, while Veronica Frisenda (Patterson, Calif.) and Paige Fralick (Mexico, N.Y.) rounded out the field at 20:40.9 and 25:32.9.

In the men's race, junior Paul Hernon (New Hartford, N.Y.) ran at a 5:55/mile pace while junior Andrew Judson (Court Gambrillis, Md.) was second for Wells, posting a time of 25:32.9 to finish 91st against the field. Freshmen Andrew Zellers (Seneca Falls, N.Y.) notched a time of 26:23.6 while Ky'aire Reed (Trenton, N.J.) finished one place behind Zellers, running at a 7:05 mile pace to finish with a time of 26:23.7 for the Express. Raymond Soriano (Laredo, Texas) completed the course with a time of 36:35.4.

Wells returns to action Saturday, Sept. 28 as they return to SUNY Institute of Technology to compete on the Long Course – earlier this year, the Express competed in the Short Course race. The women's cross country teams compete at 11:00 a.m. while the men follow at noontime.
