Every Friday throughout the summer of 2014, the Wells College Department of Athletics website will look back at the "year that was". Starting with field hockey on Friday, May 16, a comprehensive "season in review" for each of Wells' 14 NCAA Division III varsity sports will be posted, giving fans not only a look back but also a look forward to the upcoming season of play.

In only their sixth season as a varsity program, the Wells College men's basketball team went through a rebuilding year in 2013-14. The fastest program in NCAA Division III history to win 20-plus games in 2009-10, Wells entered last season with a 79-59 record across 138 games in team history and enters the 2014-15 season within arm's reach of the century mark for program victories.

NOTABLES

• JOE KNOWS: Head Coach Joe Wojtylko, currently the second longest-tenured coach at Wells, stands only three victories away from 100 in his career. Wojtylko, who won 10 games as the interim Head Coach at Hobart College in 2006, has racked up 87 games for Wells and boasts an all-time record of 97-83 (.539).

• POSTSEASON SUCCESS: The men's basketball team at Wells has qualified for the postseason in five of the last six seasons and has also appeared in the NEAC Championship game four separate times. The Express claimed the league championship in 2010-11 and later made the College's first-ever NCAA Division III Championship Tournament appearance.

• DON'T COUNT OUT THE EXPRESS: Trailing by a 14-0 margin within the game's first 3:33, Wells came all the way back to secure a 72-69 victory over the Fighting Tigers of SUNY Cobleskill early in the season. After the Fighting Tigers rally that utilized three slam dunks and two three-pointers to build their game-high lead, Wells posted a comeback for the ages and ultimately outscored SUNY Cobleskill by a 35-30 margin in the second half.

• THE BIG "HURT": Senior Jonathan Hurtado (Brooklyn, N.Y.) bombed a three-pointer with just under eight seconds left to elevate Wells to a 90-87 victory over the Wildcats of SUNY Institute of Technology on Jan. 20. The Wildcats possessed a two point lead, 87-85, with only 1:32 remaining in regulation time. A jump shot by junior Jordan Jean (Englewood, N.J.) knotted the score at 87 with only 59 seconds left on the clock. Two SUNYIT turnovers down the stretch granted Wells the ball with only 10 seconds left following a timeout. With the ball inbounded by senior Erich Kaempffe (North Rose, N.Y.), Hurtado bombed a three from the top of the arc to grant Wells a three point lead that they did not relinquish.

• THE SENIOR CLASS: Wells graduated three seniors, including Hurtado, Paul and Jonathan Bonds (Chicago, Ill.). Hurtado and Paul each conclude their two year careers ranked within the top-10 in career point scoring - Hurtado has scored 575 points in 39 games (14.7 ppg) while Paul scored 505 points for the Express (11.2 ppg). Bonds finished with 335 career rebounds (fourth all-time) while playing the ninth-most minutes of any player in team history (1,221).

• YOU CAN CALL ME AL: Senior captain Al Paul (Elmont, N.Y.) secured North Eastern Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Third Team All-Conference honors following the 2013-14 season. Known throughout the conference for his propensity to draw charges, Paul had a strong offensive season after averaging 11.6 points per game while shooting team-best 79.3% from the foul line in 2013-14 to rank fifth in the conference. Across 25 games played, Paul also shot 42.5% from the floor (96-for-226) while pouring home five three-point baskets in nine attempts as a senior.

• .539: Freshman Jordan Jean (Englewood, N.J.) put together a fine freshman campaign in 2013-14, recording up a .539 (69-for-128) field goal percentage to place fourth all-time in single season field goal percentage (min. 100 attempts). He also averaged 5.5 rebounds per game for Wells, ranking 10th all-time in single season rebounding.
