Season In Review: 2013-14 Wells College Women's Swimming

Every Friday throughout the summer of 2014, the Wells College Department of Athletics website will look back at the "year that was". Starting with field hockey on Friday, May 16, a comprehensive "season in review" for each of Wells' 14 NCAA Division III varsity sports will be posted, giving fans not only a look back but also a look forward to the upcoming season of play.

With their third consecutive North Eastern Athletic Conference Championship in 2013-14, the Wells College women's swimming program is in the midst of an unprecedented run of success. As one of two Wells College teams to win a NEAC title this past season, the Express have proven to be one of the most successful squads in Aurora in recent memory. Head Coach Trish George will enter her 10th season working with the women's swimming team looking to claim their fourth title in as many years.

NOTABLES

  • EIGHT IS GREAT: With eight victories in head-to-head matches in 2013-14, the Express set the program record for single season victories against NCAA Division III programs. Across the previous 25 head-to-head matches versus Division III teams dating back to the start of the 2012-13 season, Wells sports a 15-10 record - no other back-to-back seasons in team history boast as many victories.
  • ALL-CONFERENCE: Freshman Amelia Flint (Bath, N.Y.), sophomore Nina Daniels (Pittsford, N.Y.), sophomore Hilary Feudale (Coal Township, Pa.) and junior Olive Touron (Cato, N.Y.) picked up NEAC First Team All-Conference with the top time in the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay (8:59.12). Wells secured nine Second Team All-Conference awards and seven Third Team All-Conference nods. In total, Wells swimmers placed within the top-three 17 separate times across the three-day NEAC Championships in the middle of February.
  • THE DYNAMIC DUO: Hallie Hanson (Ashville, N.Y.) and Britta Kilbourn (Scotia, N.Y.) each wrapped up their careers for Wells College this year. Hanson, a three-year member of the Express, graduated a year early and boasts five top-10 times in three separate events. Hanson helped the Express post the program's best-ever 400 Yard Freestyle Relay time this past February. Kilbourn, a four-year graduate of Wells this past spring, boasts four top-10 times in two events. She was part of the program-record 400 Yard Freestyle Relay this past season.
  • THE PRIDE OF PITTSFORD: Sophomore Nina Daniels (Pittsford, N.Y.) picked up the first of her team's two NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week awards on Nov. 18. With a thrilling 48-47 victory over the College of St. Elizabeth, Daniels posted 17 total points after two individual first place finishes before a meet-clinching first place finish as part of the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. The seven relay points in the afternoon's final event lifted Wells to the one point victory.
  • SOPHOMORE SENSATION: Sophomore Hilary Feudale (Coal Township, Pa.) collected two first place finishes against Buffalo State College and Cedar Crest College on Jan. 13, locking up her team's second NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week award of the year. She posted a first place finish in the 100 Yard Backstroke (1:06.40) to finish four full seconds ahead of the second place finisher.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH TRISH GEORGE

  • "In the beginning, when the team went over their season goals, the number one goal was to win the NEAC Championship. This season, however, I knew it would be a bit challenging since we had our smallest team. I told the team it was possible but they would have to work for it and not just be 'good', but be 'great'. After each meet and each race, whether they swam well or not, each member came to me to discuss their performance and figure out how they could improve. Down the stretch, the team became stronger and they worked together to achieve their goal."
  • "It was an amazing feeling to watch the women's team huddle up while waiting to hear the results at the NEAC Championship. Seeing their happy faces as they hugged each other was a great moment for me as a coach. I am honored to have coached some of the best swimmers that Wells has ever seen. It has been a great experience to watch this team grow from their very first practice to today."
  • "There were many great performances throughout the season, but the two that stand out were the 200 Yard Medley Relay and the 100 Yard Breaststroke. Throughout the season, the medley relay had one goal - to break the program record. While the Wells teams across the prior two seasons had the same goal and came up short by just one half second, this year's foursome of Hilary [Feudale], Gina [Ross-Detro], Hallie [Hanson], and Olive [Touron] broke the record during the preliminary and final heats at the NEAC Championship."
  • "The second great performance of the year was by Gina [Ross-Detro] in the 100 Yard Breaststroke. Having plateaued throughout the year, she almost did not swim the event at the NEAC Championships. She eventually dropped seven seconds to place third overall - it was amazing to watch Gina and her teammates' reactions to their hard work over the season."
  • "The women's team had two seniors graduate this year, both of them playing an important role on this team. Both were a part of record-breaking relays and were placed in the top six in their events. It has been great to coach both swimmers because they were fully invested in their swimming success and routinely had discussions on how to improve their techniques. As a freshman, Britta [Kilbourn] struggled with the thought of being a distance swimmer but once she swam those events, she knew that was her place. Hallie [Hanson] was an all-around swimmer that was able to perform in any event. Their leadership, great work ethic and overall personalities will be missed next season."
  • "We will have welcome six freshmen to the squad this fall. I am excited to see what the future holds for our team. Nobody can predict the outcome but I can safely say that this group of freshmen is excited and ready to start their collegiate career and continue the success of the team."
