Season In Review: Wells College Women's Swimming

Throughout the summer of 2015, the Wells College Department of Athletics website will look back at the "year that was". Starting with men's lacrosse on Thursday, June 11, a comprehensive "season in review" for each of Wells' 14 NCAA Division III varsity sports will be posted, giving fans not only a look back but also a look forward to the upcoming season of play.

In their 40th season as a varsity program, the Wells College women's swimming program entered this past academic year looking to extend their NEAC Championship winning streak to four seasons. The impressive stretch of championship titles, however, came to an end but not without standout performances from several members of the team en route to a fourth place finish in 2015.

NOTABLES

  • NEAC CHAMPIONSHIPS: The squad fell short of claiming their fourth-consecutive North Eastern Athletic Conference Championship title at the league's championship meet in February, finishing in fourth place out of six programs with 349 points. In total, Wells swimmers posted 15 career-best times and recorded 11 new times that rank within the top-10 in team history. Express swimmers finished in third place or better 12 different times, picking up as many NEAC All-Conference awards with podium finishes.
  • CLOSE!: The Express did not set any team records at the NEAC Championship meet, but freshman Kaitlyn Schwend (San Marcos, Calif.) came the closest after placing second out of 11 swimmers in the 100 Yard Butterfly (1:03.87). The first-year swimmer was only .12 seconds away from beating Jennifer Ingold's program record of 1:03.76, set originally on Feb. 20, 1992 at the New York State Championships.
  • HAVING "BUTTERFLIES": Schwend's strong performance at the league championship capped off an impressive freshman campaign with the Express. Throughout the season, Schwend set or was part of six new additions to the Wells Top 10 record book and exited the 2014-15 season with the second-fastest times in both the aforementioned 100 Yard Butterfly and the 200 Yard Butterfly (2:25.41). She also picked up two NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week awards (12/9/14, 1/13/15) during the year.
  • WE'LL TAKE TWO: Wells picked up two head-to-head wins on Dec. 6, defeating Gallaudet by a 143-108 margin and Alfred State via a 155-27 decision. Schwend racked up three first place finishes on the afternoon while senior Olive Touron (Cato, N.Y.) posted three second place times. Senior captain Stephanie Todd (Norwich, N.Y.) captured an additional first place finish for Wells in the 1,000 Yard Freestyle with a time of 13:13.01 while the 200 Yard Medley foursome of sophomore Amelia Flint (Bath, N.Y.), classmate Gina Ross-Detro (Geneva, N.Y.), Schwend and Touron also netted a top finish with a time of 2:08.72.
  • SAYING GOODBYE: The lone senior student-athlete on the women's swimming team from Wells, Touron was a four-year member of the program and earned her team's Rookie of the Year selection in 2011-12. As an individual and as part of relay foursomes, Touron boasts an impressive 20 All-Conference selections. Her first place finish in the 500 Yard Freestyle (5:49.01) at the 2012 NEAC Championship earned her First Team All-Conference honors. She has also been a key component of the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, 800 Yard Freestyle Relay and the 200 Yard Medley Relay as her foursomes have posted the fastest times in team history.
  • SMART WATER: The Wells College men's and women's swimming programs were selected as College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America Teams in both the Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 semesters in recognition of their academic prowess. The award is presented to college and university swimming and diving teams who have achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or higher each semester.
