Bastian’s Go-Ahead Goal Lifts Express To 3-2 Victory

AURORA, N.Y. – Freshman Courtney Bastian (West Winfield, N.Y.) struck for her team-leading third goal of the season en route to a 3-2 victory for the Wells College field hockey team over the Hawks of Becker College Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Express collect their second win of the season (2-5) while the Hawks (0-7) remain winless on the season following today's non-conference contest.

Bastian scored the game-winning goal at 66:41 of the second half, less than a minute after teammate Marina Fargnoli (Apalachin, N.Y.) knotted the contest up at two apiece with her first collegiate goal. Fargnoli also received credit on Bastian's game-winning strike, giving her the first multiple-point game of her career.

Junior Valencia Chavez (Lakeside, Calif.) started the scoring on the afternoon, potting her second goal of the season only 1:26 into the first half. Avary McKinney (Rochester, N.Y.) sent a shot on net that was deflected in the goal crease by Becker netminder Gabrielle Gallo. The ensuing rebound spilled out to Chavez near the right post for the score.

With only 10 seconds remaining in the first half, Katherine Dimascio forced home a feed from Brittany Cormier off of a penalty corner, evening the score at one apiece entering the second stanza. Brooke Cote later placed the Hawks ahead by a 2-1 margin in the 43rd minute before the Express scored two goals later in the half in dramatic fashion.

Freshman goaltender Kylie Nishioka (Encinitas, Calif.) collected her second victory of the season, improving to 2-1 on the season after halting three of five shots on goal. Gallo (0-3) dropped her third contest of the year, despite making 12 saves on 15 Express shots on net.

The Express return to action Saturday, Sept. 29 as they travel to play the University of Scranton in a 12:00 p.m. road contest.
