(Aurora, N.Y.)─ The Wells field hockey team became the eighth victim of the season for Wilson College, losing 3-0 on Saturday afternoon in Aurora. Chelsea Smentkowski (Manalapen, N.J./St. John Vianney), Whitney Hawkins (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco), and Lisa Christiansen (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) all scored to lead the Phoenix. The loss drops the Express to 3-10 on the season, while the Phoenix improve to 8-3.
Smentkowski put the Phoenix on the board early in the first half, scoring an unassisted goal in the 16th minute for a 1-0 lead.
Wilson added to their lead in the second half, scoring 36 seconds in, on an unassisted goal by Hawkins and again 23 minutes later on a goal by Christiansen, sealing the 3-0 shutout.
The Express had one shot on goal coming from Emily Gottshall (Coatsville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan), while goalie Madeline Bass (Lemon Grove, Calif./Helix) finished with six saves as the Phoenix tallied 14 shots on the day.
The Express return to action next against SUNY Brockport on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. in Aurora.
