FIELD HOCKEY FALLS SHORT AGAINST ELMIRA

(Aurora, N.Y.)─ The Elmira College Soaring Eagles scored two second half goals en route to a 3-1 victory over the Wells College Express on Tuesday afternoon in Aurora. Kristina Owens (Kerhonkson, N.Y.)scored the lone goal for the Express. Gina Maffei (Wayne, N.J.), Keisha Malone (Sherril, N.Y.), and Amanda Marks (Oxford, N.Y.) all scored to lead the Soaring Eagles. The loss drops the Express to 3-9 on the year, while Elmira earns their first victory of the season and now stands at 1-10 on the year.
 
Elmira struck first when Maffei put back a shot on a scrum in front of the net to give the Soaring Eagles a 1-0 lead at 12:01 of the first half. The scored held at 1-0 heading into to the break as both teams played to stalemate the remainder of the half.
 
Elmira extended their lead seven minutes into the second half as Malone drove home a rebound for a 2-0 lead. The Express immediately answered, scoring 30 seconds later on a Kristina Owens breakaway to trim the lead to 2-1.
 
Clinging to a 2-1 lead, the Soaring Eagles did everything they could to hold off the Express, who were pressuring for a goal. But at 52:21 the Soaring Eagles got what they needed as Marks scored an unassisted goal giving Elmira some much needed breathing room and 3-1 lead they would take to victory.
 
For the game, Elmira held the advantage in shots 14-8 and penalty corners 8-6.
 
Wells returns to action next against Wilson College on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in Aurora.
