'On This Day' Chen Repeats as Top NEAC Weekly Swimmer

'On This Day' is a Wells College Athletics feature series taking a look back on events that occurred on this day, Nov. 26, one year ago in 2019.

For the second time in as many weeks, Wells College freshman Vincent Chen was named male swimmer of the week by the North Eastern Athletic Conference on Nov. 26, 2019.

Last weekend, Chen broke the Wells College 100-yard IM record with a 1:02.17 time in a tri-meet against Roberts Wesleyan and host SUNY Cobleskill.

He took another first place in the 100-yard backstroke and third place in the 100-yard butterfly. In addition, he was part of Wells College's 200-yard medley relay team that finished first that helped the men's swimming team to a split with a victory over the Redhawks.

Chen captured his first North Eastern Athletic Conference's Men's Swimmer of the Week honor just seven days earlier after leading the Wells College men's swimming team to its first victory of the season over host Roberts Wesleyan.

To earn his first NEAC swimmer of the week award, Chen competed in four events during a tri-meet between the host Redhawks and Utica College. He added his name to the all-time top-10 Wells College men's swimming performances three times, two weekends ago.

The Wells College freshman took one first-place victory and a pair of runner-up finishes in individual competition, and then joined three of his Wells College teammates in a third-place finish in relay competition.

Chen won the 200-yard freestyle with a 2:03.02 time – the eighth-best all-time finish in Wells history. His first runner-up finish came in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.44 - that put him on the all-time Wells list at tied-ninth. Chen's second runner-up finish put him higher than the other two finishes at fourth-best all-time in the 400-yard IM with a 5:04.95 time.

Chen had the fastest leg time in the 200-yard medley relay for Wells at 28.55 in securing third place with teammates Dale Paine, Jose Ramirez and Dawson Gerdon.
