'On This Day' Express Men’s Swimmers Come Away Winners in Closest of Meets

'On This Day' is a Wells College Athletics feature series taking a look back on events that occurred on this day, Jan. 29, a decade ago in 2011.

GENEVA, N.Y. ─ The Wells College men's swimming team narrowly edged the Cazenovia College Wildcats 50-49 in a triple-dual meet held at William Smith College Saturday afternoon, Jan. 29, 2011 in Geneva.

Drew Teter paced the Express with a first-place finish in the 200-yard I.M. with a time of 2:23.33 and a first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time 1:14.67. The latter time was good enough to land fourth on the all-time list of times for that event.

Chris Guard took first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:09.35, while Michael Scharvella also placed first but in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:06.

The men's team also set all-time marks in the 200-medley relay with the foursome of Scharvella, Teter, Taylor Dunn and Matt Sleezer with a time of 1:56.55, good for sixth all-time on the Wells men's swimming records list.

Scharvella moved to second all-time in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 12:33.25, while Chris Mahar moved to 10th all-time in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:24.05.
