Season In Review: Wells College Men's Soccer

Throughout the summer of 2015, the Wells College Department of Athletics website will look back at the "year that was". Starting with men's lacrosse on Thursday, June 11, a comprehensive "season in review" for each of Wells' 14 NCAA Division III varsity sports will be posted, giving fans not only a look back but also a look forward to the upcoming season of play.

The Wells College men's soccer team has improved its winning percentage in six-straight seasons under Head Coach Dan Kane, who enters his seventh year with the Express in 2015. This past year, Wells made its first postseason appearance in five years and the squad continued to post excellent results. Entering its 10th season as a varsity program, the men's soccer team at Wells will, once again, compete against a tough non-conference schedule while looking to qualify for the NEAC postseason for the second-straight year.

NOTABLES

  • ALL-CONFERENCE: Senior defenseman Cody Primmer (Oneonta, N.Y.) was named NEAC Second Team All-Conference while sophomores Hunter Sowersby (Sidney, N.Y.) and goalkeeper Michael Sciotti (North Syracuse, N.Y.) drew Third Team All-Conference merits. With three selections in 2014, Wells now boasts 12 total All-Conference honorees dating back to the first year of NEAC play in 2007.
  • THE PRIMMER FILE: A first-time All-Conference selection, Primmer led one of the strongest backfields in the conference in 2014. Wells posted its lowest team goals-against average in 2014, allowing an average of 1.04 goals per game (second in the NEAC) while registering a team .835 save percentage. In addition, the Wells backfield combined to post a league-leading seven shutouts. Having played in 17 games as a senior, Primmer has made 61 appearances for the Express and picked up his first two collegiate points this year. He ranks 13th all-time in games played for Wells and has tallied 53 career starts, 11th all time.
  • A SKILLED HUNTER: Sowersby led the Express on offense in 2014, scoring seven goals and two assists for 16 total points. Ranking fourth in single-season team history with 16 points, Sowersby ranks 10th in the NEAC in point scoring while his three game-winning goals place him in a tie for third place overall in the conference. Sowersby concluded the regular season with 24 career points, scoring 11 goals and two assists in 34 career games.
  • THE BACKSTOP: Sciotti had a standout season for Wells in goal, posting a NEAC-leading .840 save percentage and a league-best (and team record) seven shutouts (five in NEAC play) in 2014. His 1.10 goals-against average in NEAC play places him second amongst the league's backstops. One of only three NEAC goalkeepers with 10 wins, he led all NEAC players with three NEAC Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week selections in 2014.
  • WHAT A STREAK: Near the midpoint of the season, Sciotti blanked four-straight opponents (Oswego St., Penn College, SUNYIT and Cobleskill St.) to build a shutout streak of 376:12 minutes and allowed less than one goal in nine of his final 10 regular season games on the year. He now has 10 career shutouts in only 21 collegiate games played.
  • THE DIFFERENCE-MAKER: Freshman James Duchesneau's (South Glastonbury, Conn.) first collegiate goal was the difference maker in his team's 2-1 over Utica College on Sept. 9. With the win, Wells defeated the No. 9-ranked team by the USCAA in the East Region.
  • BIG NUMBER 50: Junior Tyler Morris (Maryland, N.Y.) scored the game's lone goal en route to a 1-0 victory over Oswego St. The Express, who debuted as a varsity program in 2006, picked up their team's 50th overall victory in their ninth season.
  • FIGHTING THE FIGHTING TIGERS: Wells scored seven goals in a shutout victory over the Fighting Tigers of SUNY Cobleskill on Oct. 4, tying the program record with five consecutive victories while setting the team single-game scoring record.
  • ON THE "HUNT": Sowersby scored the overtime game winner on Oct. 12, lifting his team to a 2-1 victory over Penn St.-Abington. With the extra time win, Wells set a program record for single-season victories.
  • BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: In his final collegiate regular season game, senior Charles Naula (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) scored the first two goals of his career in his team's 2-0 victory over Penn St.-Berks on Oct. 25. Wells concludes the regular season of play with a record of 11-5-1 overall and a North Eastern Athletic Conference mark of 7-3 – both standing as program records.
  • NSCAA SCHOLAR ALL-EAST REGION HONORABLE MENTION: Three members of the men's soccer team earned NSCAA Men's College Division Scholar All-East Region Honorable Mention honors for their academic and athletic prowess in 2014. Sciotti, Morris and Wyatt Buerkle (Cincinnatus, N.Y.) all earned placement on the Honorable Mention list for Wells, who placed at least one student-athlete on the list for the first time since the 2011 season (Patrick Sodums '11). To be nominated, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average throughout his or her career, start more than 50 percent of all games and be a significant contributor to the team, and be a junior or above in academic standing at the current institution.
  • REPRESENTING WELLS: For the second-straight year, the North Eastern Athletic Conference sent student-athletes to the NCAA Convention, held in Washington, D.C. from Jan. 14 through Jan. 17. Seven student-athletes from the NEAC, including Michael Sciotti, were involved in various matters at the convention.
  • CHARLES IN CHARGE: Naula represented Wells College on the USA Sports Tours and Events Division III Men's Soccer team. He joined a squad of All-American, All-Region and All-Conference players from around the country as they traveled to Brazil over the summer to compete in several exhibition contests.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH DAN KANE

  • "I am really proud of what the team was able to accomplish last year, especially after a challenging start. We will miss our seniors greatly, but the lessons they left us with - selflessness, perseverance and teamwork - will stay with the program forever."
