Season In Review: Wells College Field Hockey

Throughout the summer of 2015, the Wells College Department of Athletics website will look back at the "year that was". Starting with men's lacrosse on Thursday, June 11, a comprehensive "season in review" for each of Wells' 14 NCAA Division III varsity sports will be posted, giving fans not only a look back but also a look forward to the upcoming season of play.

The Wells College field hockey, in their first season under Head Coach Kat Heterbring, proved to be one of the most competitive squads to play on the AA Field in recent memory. A young team competed at a high level in the vast majority of their games as evidenced by eight one-goal losses. In fact, the Express appeared to play far better than their record indicated after the final results sheet shows 12 losses by two goals or less, demonstrating their competitive nature. The team enters their 40th season as a varsity program in search of a bit more scoring and, in some cases, a bit more luck in their favor.

NOTABLES

  • A NEW HOME FOR FIELD HOCKEY: As a key component of the institution's campus-wide improvements and upgrades to facilities and technology, the Wells College Board of Trustees voted to construct a lighted artificial turf playing field that will house men's and women's soccer, men's and women's lacrosse, field hockey and future baseball and softball teams. The field is expected to be completed by the spring of 2016.
  • IMPROVING THE OFFENSE: As a team, the Express concluded their 39th season as a varsity program with the fourth-most goals scored (21) dating back to the 1986 season, the year Wells joined the NCAA.
  • HEADING TO THE NEAC: The North Eastern Athletic Conference has announced the addition of field hockey as a conference-sanctioned sport beginning in the 2015-16 athletic season. The conference's 18th sport offering, field hockey becomes the ninth women's sport sponsored by the NEAC. Wells will play against rivals from Morrisville St., Wilson and a newly-formed program at Keuka College.
  • HAVING A "SENIOR" MOMENT: Sparked by two goals from senior Marina Fargnoli (Apalachin, N.Y.) and freshman Kate Wells (Gardner, Mass.), the Wells College field hockey team picked up a 5-0 shutout victory over Ferrum College to conclude their 39th season as a varsity program.
  • RACKING UP THE POINTS: With 13 total points of offense against Ferrum, the Express posted their second-best statistical offensive performance dating back to at least the 2008 season. Last season, Wells had 20 points of offense against Bay Path on Sept. 28, 2013.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH KAT HETERBRING

  • "I was proud of our team's effort in a lot of our games this past year, but we have a lot to prove heading into our team's 40th season. We came up just short in a lot of our games and I expect that our returning players will be ready to go in late August in anticipation of the season."
  • "The diversity of our incoming class will be an asset going forward. In terms of depth, our roster will be the largest in recent years and there will be intense competition for several starting positions. I expect there to be greater balance across the attacking, midfield and defensive lines that should translate to improved results."
