Field Hockey Drops 1-0 Double Overtime Heartbreaker

AURORA, N.Y. – The Wells College field hockey team survived five minutes of the first overtime period playing without a goalkeeper but dropped a tough 1-0 double-overtime loss at the hands of Keystone College on Wednesday. Wells falls to 2-4 overall while the Giants win their first game of the season in five contests.

Wells controlled the tempo throughout the contest, outshooting the guests by a 24-to-8 margin, but the team was unable to strike for a goal through the first 70 minutes of regulation. Without a backup goalkeeper for the game, a yellow card on the starting Wells netminder forced the Express to step up and play without a padded player in cage.

The Express defense, however, put forth a herculean effort and either blocked or forced three Keystone shots wide of the goal. The Giants, however, cashed in with a goal in the 88th minute immediately following a penalty corner taken by Genesis Pacheco in the second overtime. Sending the ball to the top of the arc, Shelby Croasdale finally broke the deadlock and sent her team to a thrilling 1-0 victory.

Wells goalkeeper Kendrick Wilson (Collins, N.Y.) played an outstanding game in goal for the Express, coming out on several breakaways to disrupt the fast-charging front line for Keystone. She finished with two saves while the Keystone goalkeeper, Amy Denmon, made 12 saves without allowing a goal across 88:46.

The Express return to action Sunday, Sept. 27 as they face-off against Keuka on the road at 2 p.m. The game marks the second North Eastern Athletic Conference tilt of the year for Wells.
